Block Printing with Mary Ann Simmons

Mary Ann Simmons

Have you ever admired the organic handmade look of a linocut print and wished you knew the steps involved for making your own designs? Well here is your opportunity to learn this fun and accessible art form. In this beginner level linocut class, participants will learn the basics for
creating an original linocut relief print. Participants will learn: how to design and transfer an image onto a linocut block; how to carve into the linoleum using handheld gouges; how to roll water-soluble ink onto the surface using a brayer; and finally, how to print the image by laying printing paper onto the block and applying pressure using a spoon or baren.

Mary Ann Simmons is the instructor for this class. Mary Ann is a local print and mixed media artist. She was reintroduced to linocut printing since moving to Boerne and loves exploring the possibilities of using linocut prints with collage and other mixed media. Her linocut prints have been sold in local art shows but her favorite use of her prints is to share with friends and family.
All materials for this class will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring an idea or sketch of the image they would like to carve.
